Green With Envy: Celebrating The Color Of The Year

01 Pantone Color Swatch Emerald

03 Green SetI have always loved the color green, and as long as I have been buying cosmetics I have always been drawn to fabulous shades of green for eyes, lips, nails, and anything else you want to slap a little color onto!  That’s why I was thrilled when Sephora announced that their 2013 Color of the Year collaboration with Pantone Universe would be Emerald!  That meant a whole line of fabulous, frothy products bursting with one of my favorite shades of my favorite color.  As I started snapping up pieces in this new collection, I started thinking about how much time and money I’ve spent on green makeup in my life.

Green isn’t always an easy color to wear.  There are some toned-down shades of green, some lovely earthy colors that can be worked seamlessly into a more neutral look…but I just ain’t that kinda queen!  I love a brash, brazen green that announces itself with a shimmy and a shout.  If you are going to rock a bright, vivid green, you have to commit!

03 Green ShadowsWhat I love about green is that it can be sexy and elegant (think Julianne Moore in her emerald Oscars gown circa The Hours and Far From Heaven.  Her pale skin and red hair with the green of the dress – stunning!) or it can be earthy and sweet.  A mint green and a pale pink can evoke the feeling of cruising in a ’57 Chevy with the top down and those huge tail fins – long before gas was $4.00 a gallon!  Green is nature at its most lush and verdant, plants bursting forth into bloom.  Green is also just a little bit dangerous!  Think of Poison Ivy, the Wicked Witch of the West, the secret heart of a forbidden jungle – all cloaked in shades of emerald green.  Plants can be beautiful, but they can also be deadly.  Green can be inviting, but it can also keep us at bay or punish us for coming too close, like the thorns on a rosebush.  Green is seduction.  This juxtaposition is not entirely surprising given that green is also the color associated with the heart chakra.  It is why green can be such a soothing color, but can also be the color of envy and jealousy, for what are we more envious of than that we love with all of our heart?

Green has also become the color of greed, the desire for more wealth and power.

All of these thoughts about green come alive when I’m playing with the color, and I’m thrilled that Sephora and Pantone came together to create this amazing collection.  I decided to take some photos to show off most of the green cosmetics I’ve got knocking around in my kit (you’ll find those at the bottom)!  I’m sure there are a few pieces I missed, and this doesn’t include any of the fabulous greens that I have as part of palettes – I’ve definitely got a lot of green options at my disposal!  If anyone has recommendations for their favorite shade of green, please post them in the comments!

Need some inspiration?  I’ve included a couple of tutorial videos below using fabulous shades of green!
