The Secret’s OUT: 10% Society Shows Moving To The VFW, East Grand Forks, Becoming 18+

0000 VFW LipsOnce again, the infamous drag shows sponsored by the 10% Society at UND are about to transform: they are moving to the VFW in East Grand Forks (right on Demers Ave, next to Discontent) and for the first time in a long time, will be open to 18+!  That means that more of our community will be able to gather, enjoy a great show, and experience a little nightlife in a town not known for its entertainment options for the 18 and over crowd.

The drag shows have a long history in the Greater Grand Forks communities: they initially started as dances in the basement of the Highlander Lounge in December of 2000.  The 10% Society put together enough funds to hire a DJ and book the room with no idea what to expect.  They put on the first dance and it was a tremendous success, bringing in enough money to host another dance, and then another.  After a year, in December of 2001, the drag shows started.  The first show was small, featuring only 5 local performers, but have grown over the years to include a wide range of both kings and queens from Grand Forks, Crookston, Fargo, Bismarck, and Minot, as well as visiting performers from the Twin Cities.

A few years ago, the shows were having capacity problems in the basement of the Highlander and in December of 2006, the shows moved to their current location at Sensations.  With the complex set to be torn down sometime this year, it was time for the shows to consider a move again.  The VFW in East Grand Forks was open and receptive to the shows moving into their location, and the partnership has some real potential.

0000 DrinksOne of the concerns is space, as the shows bring in pretty large crowds of 200 people or more in an evening.  The VFW can accommodate large crowds and also features their own parking behind the building.  Another big win for the space is that because of the way it is licensed, the shows will once again be open to 18+, something that hasn’t happened since the Highlander days.  The venue also has a perfect location: it’s within walking distance of other entertainment locations in downtown Grand Forks yet “off the beaten path” enough that those who are still in their coming out process can feel relatively safe in attending the show.

This move is a big win for the UND 10% Society, and we look forward to many more years of great quality shows in this location.

The first show at the VFW will be Saturday, February 22.  Doors will open at 8, show at 9, $10 cover, and will be 18+ with ID.

**Specials for Feb 22 ONLY: Wear any UND TPS shirt and get in for half price!  Pay only $5 for the first show in our new location when you wear a tshirt from the 10% Society – any year, any style!  Just wear it proudly and get $5 off!
