00 Into the WoodsPictures and teasers for the new big budget film adaptation of Sondheim and Lapine’s Into The Woods have been all over the internet in preparation for the film’s Christmas Day release.  It’s not clear how the film will be received; there was a loud and angry reaction across the interwebs after an interview where Sondheim suggested that Disney might be cleaning up the grittier parts of the musical.  Sondheim has since released a clarifying statement to address the concerns (you can read about his follow up as well as link to the original article HERE) but it will be interesting to see how the Magic Kingdom presents a show that expertly skewers their bread and butter, the fairytale.

Clearly hoping to capitalize on this fairytale frenzy, the UND Department of Theatre Arts is presenting their own production of Into The Woods.  Act 1 presents a host of familiar fairytale characters acting out their typical stories with surprising connections; in act 2, things go a little crazy and we get to see these familiar characters from a more adult and nuanced perspective.

The show plays on the Burtness Theatre mainstage at 7:30 pm, Thursday through Saturday.  Tickets are $20 for adults, with discounted tickets available for students.
