Pretty In Pink: Celebrating VIB Appreciation Week With My Signature Color

This is one of my favorite times of year: Sephora’s Beauty Insider Appreciation week.  Not only are there lots of fabulous products on the shelves that I’ve been drooling over, but purchasing them during this week earns me 4X the usual rewards points!  That means I’m 4X closer to all of those great loyalty rewards, like the 100 point deluxe minis, the 250 point mini fragrances, and the 500 point curated collections.  On top of that, they are also releasing this year’s batch of super limited VIB Rouge exclusive rewards on August 10.  I’ve actually been keeping my Sephora addiction somewhat in check as of late, so my balance isn’t as high as it might be, but I saved some of the purchases I’ve been waiting to make for the 4X promotion, and I think come Monday I will have enough to snag one of the 1000-point rewards (if I’m quick enough!).  If I do, you betta believe there will be an upcoming post about it!

Anyway, in order to celebrate appreciation week (and get me a little closer to those 1000 point goodies!), I decided to go “pretty in pink” with two fabulous items – one that I’ve been eyeing for a while and another that’s a recent addition to what is quickly becoming one of my favorite brands.

First up is Dior’s Addict Lip Gloss in #576 Bed of Roses.  This one I’ve been drooling over for some time; a while back in a sample bag I received a little vial of the gloss in #643 Diablotine and I fell in love with the smooth, slick without sticky texture and the shimmer color.  I decided to try out a bright, Barbie pink which I know will complement a lot of my favorite lipsticks and lip tars.  At $29.50, it’s more than I would usually spend on a lip gloss, but I rationalized it by reminding myself of how good I’ve been at curtailing my Sephora spending AND I have a photo shoot with Miranda Roen that’s going to be a pink story, so I can use it for that.  And it’s Dior, bitches!  I don’t imagine I’ll be adding a ton of these glosses to my kit, but it was a nice treat and it earned me 120 reward points!

As expected from my experience with the sample, the texture is perfect.  It’s thick enough that you don’t have to worry about it melting all over your face but thin enough that you don’t feel like you’ve painted your lips in Gorilla Glue.  The scent is nondescript and almost non-existent; to make it a little more frou-frou, I wouldn’t have minded some sort of delicious scent, but it’s nice to see a luxury brand that has some scent-free options for those who are sensitive.

I started playing around with it and did a swatch of it by itself as well as over Bite’s Opal lipstick (which may just have to get a post all it’s own – the 90s are back! lol).  I love that by itself it still has plenty of color presence.  Some glosses look great in the tube, but then apply with only the sheerest of colors.  This one is not a full opaque but still packs a pretty strong color punch.  I love the swatch over the Opal as well – it has a great lavender-pink finish that is very girly while still having a little edge with it’s shine.  This is one high end product that really is worth the hype (and the extra cost, if you’re looking for a treat!).

My other pink purchase is from a brand that I am really coming to love: Too Faced Cosmetics.  While I’m still not 100% sold on their eyeshadows yet (they just don’t have the pigmented punch I get from standbys like Urban Decay and SugarPill), I am completely charmed by their Melted liquid lipsticks and I have really been getting into their face products: blushes, shimmers, and contouring powders.  Their Chocolate Contouring Palette has become a staple in my show makeup routine and really helps me carve out a face (the yummy chocolate scent doesn’t hurt either!).  Their Candlelight Shimmer Powder has just enough sparkle to really highlight without being harsh, and blends beautifully especially with the Chocolate powders.  I decided to try out one of their Love Flush 16-Hour blushes in How Deep Is Your Love.  I was torn between that shade a lighter, more baby pink color but decided to go with this because I thought it would be a good mid-range color for building up cheek color and would be a good substitute for Orgasm by Nars if I wanted to go more straight pink instead of coral/gold.  And at $26 for .21 oz, it’s a price improvement over NARS which comes in .16 oz  for $30.

The heart-shaped compact is cute, but it is a little hard to open – the way the plastic curves, it’s hard to get a grip on the bottom section to pull the top up.  Luckily it has a magnetic closure instead of a plastic tab, so there’s no fear of raging out in frustration and breaking it (unless you throw it across the room, in which case I can not be held responsible for its condition!).  When swatching it on my hand, I liked that it had a nice light pink presence with one layer and built up well from there.  I won’t actually see how it works with my stage makeup until this weekend, but I have high hopes!

However you choose to celebrate Beauty Insider Appreciation Week, make sure you remember that no matter how much or how little you put on your face, your beauty comes from within.  Makeup is just for funsies.

Now Go Forth And Get Painted!
