“Careful the things you say – children will listen!”

Into The Woods 02The Empire Theatre Company is ready to launch their 2015-16 season, and as per usual they are getting started with a bang: a big stage musical extravaganza.  In previous years they’ve done newer and more quirky pieces as their openers, including the delightfully raunchy Avenue Q and the delightfully cheesy Xanadu, but this time around they are sticking to much more familiar territory: Sondheim’s Into The Woods, a retelling of multiple fairytales with a central narrative of love, sacrifice, and growing up out of innocence.  Although this show is one of my favorite musicals, Sondheim or otherwise, I was a little leery when I heard that this would serve as the season opener; with the Hollywood adaptation having coming and gone nearly a year ago and a few local and regional productions already wrapped (UND featured it in last season’s lineup leading up to the release of the film) in the last few years, I wondered if it was far too safe and even – dare I say it? – overdone.

But one thing I’ve come to expect from ETC productions is the unexpected, so I am willing to suspend my slight misgivings and once again immerse myself in a world of giants, witches, spells, and happy endings that are neither as happy or as final as they seem.  Look for a review of the show coming soon!

You can catch it this weekend and next at the Empire Arts Center, Wednesday through Saturday at 7:30 pm.
