Double Vision: Sephora Announces 2016 Pantone Color(s) of the Year

Can I just say THANK GAWD the year of Marsala is over.

I’m usually the biggest cheerleader for the Sephora + Pantone Universe Color of the Year.  2014’s Orchid? Intriguing!  2013’s Emerald? Decadent!  2012’s Tangerine Tango?  Caliente!  But along came 2015, and with all of the hubbub about Urban Decay’s Naked 3 palette (which is GORGEOUS, don’t get me wrong) Sephora decided to try to cash in on red-toned neutrals and gave us Marsala.

Pantone 05

Just…ugh.  Granted, as an enormous drag queen neutrals don’t really do that much for my anyway, but to me the Pantone Universe line is all about celebrating color.  I didn’t love everything in the Orchid line, either, but I loved the fresh use of vivid floral tones.  To follow that up with this muddy red-brown was just such a disappointment.  And while it did seem an obvious choice, to try to line up a color that paired well with the insanely popular Naked 3 palette (I wrote about all of this in last year’s COTY post, HERE), I’m not sure that lightning struck twice: I didn’t see the collection hang around long in the JC Penney stores near me and I also don’t feel like I saw as many additional products throughout the year like I did with other collections (especially Emerald).

Pantone 04This year, Sephora is going back to the more colorful history of the Pantone pairing and giving us not one, but two fabulous 2016 Colors of the Year: Rose Quartz and Serenity.  If last year was all about the neutral, this year is all about the pastel: Rose Quartz is a light baby pink and Serenity is a soft ethereal blue.  Combined, the two can create a gorgeous lavender shade that’s almost like a softer, bluer relative of 2014’s Orchid (coincidence??).

Rose Quartz is almost like a do over for last year – since Naked 3’s shtick was neutrals tinged with pinks and roses, this lipstick could have paired with that collection easily while keeping the Pantone line more colorful and vivid.  Serenity, the companion shade, is a return to non-traditional color like Emerald, inviting people who love the soft femininity of pastels to mix with those who love a wild dose of color (blue lipstick? Yes, please!).

Pantone 03The collection that surrounds them is all pastel watercolor fabulousness!  There is a lip gloss collection that has caught my eye – blue, yellow and purple lip glosses all in one set?! – and the eyeshadow palette looks solid, though nothing really surprising or intriguing.  There are also two lipsticks in the COTY colors, and I’m sure those will make their way into my kit.  Serenity doesn’t look like it’s going to be that much different than Lime Crime’s No She Didn’t (maybe a tough lighter), but if it’s an opaque blue in that color it’s going to be to DIE!  The pink is nice and light, and looks to be a nice shade to either use alone for a soft, girly look or to layer combine with other lipsticks.  You could also use it on the inner part of the mouth over top of a matte lip paint like ColourPop’s Ultra Mattes to create a fun ombre that plays with both color and texture.

Here is a swatch video and review from Allura Beauty (the video is 10 minutes long, but the Sephora + Pantone part is only 8 minutes, then it’s footage from other videos and a subscribe link):

It’s another year, and the future is looking rosy with the selection of the 2016 Sephora + Pantone Universe Colors of the Year: Rose Quartz and Serenity.  Whether you want to stay more traditional and stick with the pick side of the spectrum or get a bit punky with blues, yellows, and purples, the pastel playground is officially open, and thumbing its nose at last year’s nude obsession.

And as far as we’re concerned, it’s not a moment too soon!

Now Go Forth And Get Painted!
