Finding Serenity? Spending Time With Sephora’s Color(s) Of The Year

I had posted earlier about Sephora’s 2016 Color of the Year, presented with collaborator Pantone Universe – actually, two Colors of the Year, Rose Quartz and Serenity (if you missed that post, you can read it HERE).  Recently, I found a pastel-infused lip gloss collection on sale at my local Sephora inside JC Penney.  Since then, I’ve also had the chance to pick up one of the lipsticks and the eyeshadow palette.  Here’s what we’re looking at today:

Left to right: Lip Gloss, Cantaloupe; Lip Gloss, Sunlit Allium; Lip Glass, Pale Banana; Matte Lipstick, Serenity; Modern Watercolors Eye Palette; Lip Gloss, Rose Quartz; Lip Gloss, Serenity.

I had a chance to swatch the lipstick and glosses; I played around with the eyeshadows a little but I wasn’t able to get any decent swatch images and I wasn’t feeling motivated to reswatch every single color in the palette.  Sorry ’bout it (#sorrynotsorry).  But images or no, here are my thoughts on the opening volley from this year’s Pantone COTY collection.

I’ll start with the eyeshadows:

COTY

Overall, I love the quality and consistency of these!  I’m not usually a huge fan of the Sephora store brand, but they seem to put in a little extra effort (and quality!) with their special edition eye palettes, and this always shows in the eye products put out with Pantone Universe.  What’s not my favorite is that the palette comes with a plastic overlay with the color numbers from the Pantone collection, but the palette itself doesn’t have actual color names anywhere on it.  Lame, right?!  Luckily, Miss Jaye has your back and I actually looked up the Pantone numbers to give you a complete shade list:

Top row, left to right: Bright White (11-0601), Rose Quartz (13-1520), Honeydew (12-5808), Cafe Creme (16-1220), Mellow Yellow (12-0720), and Ash (16-3802).
2nd row, left to right: Antique White (11-0105), Mushroom (14-1305), Pelican (14-6305), Chinois Green (17-5107), Cedar Wood (17-1525), and Citadel (17-4111).
3rd row, left to right: Oyster Mushroom (13-4201), Coral Haze (16-1329), Pale Mauve (15-1607), Cafe au Lait (17-1227), Boa (17-0625), and Serenity (15-3919).
Bottom row, left to right: Fruit Dove (17-1926), Orchid Haze (16-2107), Cascade (14-5713), Lantana (16-1624), Linden Green (15-0533), and Marina (17-4041).

Even though I’m super annoyed that I (or anyone) had to do that much searching to get color names, I do love these shadows!  They have a nice smooth, creamy powder feel with lots of emollients to make application a dream!  Favorites?  Mellow Yellow applies somewhat sheer, so you need to layer it a bit to get more color payoff, but it’s a great yellow option for a highlighter shade.  Chinois Green pairs nicely with that shade as it has a very subtle yellowish duochrome. Marina is a great blue that looks really intense in the palette, but sheers out well when applied so that you can use it without going full on 80s blue!  Same with Fruit Dove (what the hell is a Fruit Dove?!) – it looks a little scary red in the palette, but it also sheers out to a nice raspberry red kind of color that you can build up as much as you like.  These shadows will definitely be great accents to other, bolder colors.

Now for the lip products:

Sephora Lips

The Matte Lipstick in Serenity is the winner here.  It’s got a great formulation that is soft and doesn’t feel either waxy or like clay, but still has a nice, fairly matte application (I’m convinced that makeup companies have forgotten what matte actually fuckin’ means, but more on that rant in another post!).  The color is a gorgeous light cornflower blue (gawd, that was one of my favorite crayons growing up!) and I would say that it gives Lime Crime’s No She Didn’t a run for its money!  It’s a little bit deeper and less electric than the LC shade, but I think that’s to its credit.  The Rose Quartz layering lipstick was out of stock, so I didn’t have a chance to pair them together, but the idea is that it’s a sheer pink that when layered over the Serenity creates this lovely lilac shade.  A nice thought, but it seems like a bit of a waste of the color.  I suppose it’s a concession to those who feel that the COTY collections have been a little too wild in the past (I mean, not everyone can pull off Emerald!).

Sephora Lips SwatchThe lip glosses overall were a disappointment.  For a second, I was really excited when I saw the color selection until I realized that they would probably be very sheer.  This was mostly true, as you can see from the swatches, but I was surprised that they had as much pigmentation as they did.  Rose Quartz is the biggest disappointment: the pink virtually disappears and it just takes on this weird milky look that is not flattering.  I’d say what it really looks like, but I’m a fuckin’ lady…a lady who has spent her share of time in the back rooms of adult bookstores.  Let’s just leave it at that.

The Serenity is ok, and could add a little bump of color over the lipstick, but there’s nothing really special about it by itself.  Cantaloupe and Foxglove are probably the most interesting of the group, but these glosses need something to pep them up – some glitter, maybe a pearlescent finish, something!  They also need a thinner formula – if you’re going to be that sheer, people are going to want to layer them on to try to get a bit more payoff, and layering this goop on thick is nothing short of cosmetic torture!  Sephora’s house brand lip products are always a bit “hit or miss” and these are definitely a miss!

So, I’d love to know what YOU think about this year’s COTY collection: is the duo a dream combo of pastel realness, or are you falling asleep at the wheel waiting for something (anything!) exciting to happen?  Do you have a favorite color from years past?  What do you want to see become the COTY for 2017?  Comment below!  If you want to check out the collection on the Sephora website, you can do that HERE.
