Rack It Up: Giving Urban Decay Lip Sets A Second Chance PLUS Urban Decay Giveaway! Ends June 10

Y’all know there are three things this bitch loves: Urban Decay.  A good lipstick.  An amazing deal.  Trust that Nordstrom Rack would find a way to combine those three amazing things into one!

I’ve written a lot about makeup that I’ve snatched up at the Nordstrom Rack (like THIS fun Urban Decay palette!), but I’ve never really made it into a series before.  I decided that in addition to all of the new makeup I review, I wanted to have a sort of “second chance” playlist for all of those items that I just wasn’t feelin’ at full price but that when I see them with that sale sticker on the shelves of the Rack, I just can’t resist!  So welcome to the first installment of “Rack It Up,” and what better way to kick it off than with a brand I love at regular AND sale price (and that is often featured prominently at the Rack), Urban Decay!

On recent work trips to both Arizona and Seattle, I saw the Urban Decay “The Ultimate Pair” lip sets in a variety of colors.  The set consists of a Vice lipstick and a matching or coordinating (more on that later) 24/7 Glide On Lip Pencil, and were marked at $14; I’m not sure what they were full price (the sticker says $22.00 but that seems low), but the Vice lipsticks are $17 alone, so it’s like getting $3 off the lipstick and getting the liner completely free!  I also don’t remember how much the lip liners were individually, but the 24/7  eyeliners are $20 each so that’s a pretty impressive deal if you consider the individual retail prices.  The Vice formula is one of my favorite tube lipsticks, though some of the performance is dependent on the specific finish.  Between Rack locations in Tempe, Chandler, and Seattle, I picked up 6 different sets, 3 with coordinated liners and 3 with matching liners.  Here’s what I got:

For each of the coordinated kits, the lipstick shade is listed first, followed by the liner shade.  For the matching shades, the lipstick and liner are in the same shade (obvi).  Here are swatches of all 6 shades:

Rack 07
Left to Right: Ex-Girlfriend lipstick and Naked 2 liner, Firebird lipstick and Jilted Liner, Backtalk lipstick and Rush liner, Bad blood lipstick and liner, 1993 lipstick and liner, Big Bang lipstick and liner.

Below I’m including more photos and swatches – just know that I did a pretty shit job of photographing these.  I was riding the struggle bus, and in some of the photos you can see that there’s a chunk taken out of the Firebird lipstick from when I dropped my cellphone in the middle of a shot.  I was a hot mess, but I think you’ll get the idea.  In all of the swatches below, I drew a lips-shaped outline with the liner and then filled it in with the lipstick.

Rack 01
Ex-Girlfriend & Naked 2: This one is probably my least favorite, but it’s definitely me and not the kit.  I’m not a huge fan of super nude lips (though I’ve been trying to learn!), and that combined with the Sheer Shimmer finish of the lipstick meant that I was destined to find this set a little bit meh.  It’s a pretty praline brown and if you like a shiny wash of color this is a really good option for a nude look.  I also think I can get some use out of this by layering it over some nude liquid lipsticks, so all is not lost.  The liner is a little too light to use for my brows, though you never know what kind of craziness I might get up to.

Rack 02
Firebird & Jilted: This is a bod color choice but I really love it!  This is the Cream finish which leaves a wt look shine and the purple pink is extreme but really saturated and lovely.  If this color is your jam, this is a great kit for you.  The liner, Jilted, is a little more purple than the lipstick, so you could work it in with some of your other more purple lipsticks as well.  This is not for the faint of heart, but it’s a perfect example of why urban Decay slays the game when it comes to lip products.

Rack 03
Backtalk & Rush: Let’s be real – I bought this set specifically because I already had the Backtalk palette and I wanted to do a “Full Face One Brand” challenge and use the palette and the coordinating lipstick (plus the Hi Fi Shine gloss in Backtalk too!)  It’s a mauve-pink that is neutral but not boring, and I’m definitely living for it.  I like to ombre it up to make it a little bit more extra, but it’s also lovely on its own and the Rush liner is a perfect complement.  Comfort Matte is my favorite UD lipstick finish, and this is a lovely example.

rack 04
Bad Blood: Urban Decay does a lot of really great reds, and although this isn’t my favorite (Spiderwebs takes that title) it is a gorgeous cool blue-based red and the liner is just a touch darker and is a fantastic match for a classic red pout.  No word on whether or not Taylor Swift likes this shade, but she could always pick up one of these sets on sale and send it to Katy Perry as a peace offering.  or maybe not…but she’d only be out 14 bucks!  This one is also comfort matte, and I love the way it sits on the lips.

Rack 05
1993:  I don’t usually love brown/neutral lipsticks, but I actually really love this shade.  It’s sort of grungy brown and fits with a very 90s aesthetic, but I can see this working with so many of the warm neutral palettes out there…which is every damn palette these days because makeup companies don’t mind putting out the same shit over and over and over and…but that’s a rant for a different day.  This is a comfort matte finish and it’s a fantastic, pigmented lipstick.  I approve.

Rack 06
Big Bang:  This is the metallized finish, and though I do appreciate it, it just isn’t the same as their old glitter lipsticks.  Does anyone else remember Uzi?  That shit was silver glitter in a tube and it applied exactly how it appeared in the tube.  I’ve never found a glitter lipstick like that before or since.  This is still good: it’s a pink semi-sheeer base with lots of pink sparkle with some blue flash and it’s worlds better than most glitter lipsticks.  I just wish it were a little more glitter heavy like Uzi.  A girl can dream.  They made a smart choice and made the matching liner more opaque and a little darker, but it still has some metallic sparkle and is a nice addition to my liner collection.

Urban Decay is often featured at the Rack and there were other products I could have picked up for this review.  They had the 9-pan Troublemaker palette with the deluxe mini of Troublemaker mascara, the first version of the After Glow highlighter palette (which is life – I have both the first and second palettes, and they are every-damn-thing!), some of the Naked Skin powder foundations, and in Seattle I even saw a few of the Naked On The Run face kits.  The selection is always changing, and stuff disappears quickly, but I recommend keeping an eye on them to see what kind of beauty steals you can get your makeup loving mitts on.  These lip kits are amazing and I’m super excited that I was able to add these to my collection.

    • JanessaJaye says:

Big Bang is so good! I haven’t tried their Troublemaker mascara but it’s definitely on my list to try. Have yet to find something I like better than the Too Faced Better Than Sex mascara! :)

  2. Brida says:

My absolute favorite UD item has to be 1993 Vice Liquid Lipstick. I seriously want to try it in regular lipstick form and now I’ve heard about these lovely sets, I might just have to get the 1993 one and have the liquid lipstick, lipstick and liner. I live in seattle – did you by any chance see Naked Smoky in the rack there? I did back in January and I’m kicking myself for passing it up.

    • JanessaJaye says:

No, they didn’t have any of the Smoky when I was there a couple of weeks ago :( I have that palette, and I like it…UD is trying to act like it never existed! lol

I’m trying to learn how to do more nude/natural looks – not easy for a queen! lol The only palette I’ve hit pan on any shades for is Naked 3, and that’s the one I used for my Edna looks when I was in HAIRSPRAY!

  7. I cannot live without UD’s eye potion. It is hands down the best eye primer on the market. I’ve tried a million brands from MAC to drugstore and for my money Urban Decay is hard if not impossible to beat.

    • JanessaJaye says:

SAME! I live for that stuff! I just wish they would go back to the squeeze tube…that new doefoot packaging is a mess!

  8. Kimmy says:

    This is my favorite

Never used UD but loving the Fireball swatch so that is what I am going to go with wanting to try!

    • JanessaJaye says:

Fireball is a GORGEOUS shade, but it depends on what product line it’s in…Urban Decay translates their shades into a lot of different formulas, and some are better than others. The eyeshadow? LIFE! The highlight fluid? Not…life. LOL

  11. Keyla Mount says:

The only thing I’ve ever used of urban decay is that all nighter foundation and I love that it says on all that stuff but it makes me look really r The only thing I’ve ever used of urban decay is that all nighter foundation and I love that it stays on And has amaIng coverage but it makes me look orange.

Firebird & Jilted looks amazing! I a pink girl.

  12. Kelly K says:

I am addicted to the UD eyeshadow palettes & have (oops) all of them but I’d have to say my ride or die UD product is the De-Slick Setting spray. I’ve tried lots of different setting sprays & that one gives me the best results.

My makeup obsession is real. I just picked up my first urban decay lipsticks (gubby and peyote), and I’m obsessed.
