This look went off the rails...but there were some fun lessons learned!
So, we've done a couple of these Flashback Face Fridays with looks that I think turned out really well. This...is not that. I'm pretty proud of the look overall, but I clearly didn't know what I was doing when I tried these colorful freckles! Let's take a closer look at how this mess all came together.
First, the face. This section of the look makes me a little sad because there are a lot of products that I either can't get, or that represent changes to the industry that I'm not very excited about. The I Heart Revolution primer has been discontinued, and that's a real shame. It was a fabulous primer for my oily and textured skin, and it was less than $10! I don't really do color correcting anymore - I realized that I paint it on so thick that I don't really need to bother!
The Uoma Beauty foundation and concealer are still a favorite, and I'm hesitantly hopeful that Uoma Beauty can come back from the mess that it's in (long story short: the company was sold, and in the changeover, people placed orders on the website that were never serviced for 15 months!), but it's sad to see another fabulous Black Owned Makeup Brand change hands and no longer be black-owned. Even if they can rebound, Sharon Chuter was a force, and she was the driving inspiration with the brand, so it will be interesting to see if the brand can continue what she started.
And of course, Sugar Cookie. Give Me Glow has been doing a lot of reformulating, relaunching, and shaking up their inventory, and the gorgeous Sugar Cookie powder is no longer available. This hurts a little less since I have found other powders that I like even better (looking at you, Kim Chi Chic Beauty!) but this was such a staple of my makeup for so long!
I feel like there might be a photo collage or two missing from the step-by-step process, but this orange look was all done with the Huda Beauty Neons mini palette in the neon orange colorway and the Slush palette from September Rose Cosmetics. They blended together gorgeously! Orange isn't one of my favorite colors, but I love how this all came together. The glitter on the lid is a Space Paste glitter gel from Lemonhead LA, and Then I added some random gems and drew on a brow from an LA Girl pencil and then set it with Tiger's Blood.
I'm so glad that I figured out how to do brows with cake liner - those drawn on brows had terrible staying power! I was always smearing my brows! And the Veggie Burger lashes from Glamlite are still great! I have switched over to mainly using Blend Bunny lashes, but the lashes from Glamlite are still in my collection and I still love them!
Instead of my usual, more intense contour, I decided to just set a base with the Ofra Blush Duo in Chick Lit, a collab product with Samantha March. I added some Juvia's Place and Ofra Blushes on top, but I always prefer a shimmer cheek to a matte one, so I added a cora/gold highlight from Ofra on top to glow it up, and then the highlight shade from the Too Faced Sweet Peach Glow face palette.
Remember when the launch of the Sweet Peach collection from Too Faced broke the internet? It was fairly rare for a large, mainstream brand to have a sellout, and this one had multiple sellouts! It still happens with some of the smaller indie brands that are super popular, but it's rare for a big mainstream brand to have such a wild launch these days!
I tried a few lips before I got the depth and shine that I wanted. I tried a Plushies and a Diamond Crusher from Lime Crime. I know that they have a very troubled history, but I'm sad that they are shutting down their makeup operation and just going forward with hair color. Lime Crime had some pretty bomb lip formulas, and a lot of their other products were great as well. The other lip in that collage is Impulse Cosmetics. They had a ton of interesting, complex liquid lipstick colors, but the products dried out very quickly. I liked them, but I never loved them enough to keep buying them.
For the final look, I ended up putting down a base of Jeffree Star Cosmetics (I believe that mini red-orange shade was from the Equality lip bundle?), and then I topped with a duochrome glass from MAC.
When this came out, I'd been watching a lot of Imperfectly Em and they were doing a lot of "sprinkle" looks with colorful spots/freckles, and I thought, "Hey, I can do that." Spoiler alert: I could NOT do that. I needed a smaller brush to get more precision, and this went too wild too fast. I don't hate it, it is a fun look, but I want to go back and try this sort of look again with more skill and practice!
The cake liner is from Glam Vice, which is now Gavissi Beauty. They are still my go to source for amazing cake liners!
It didn't turn out the way I had hoped or expected, but it was still a fun look to create. Makeup should be fun, so don't get dragged down if it doesn't turn out exactly the way you hoped - it all washes right off! Just enjoy, have fun, and get a little wild sometimes! I certainly gained some amazing experience from this look!
