Wig? Snatched!

chrismstoner

I wanted to create a resource for some of my favorite wig tutorials and resources. I'm no Vidal Sassoon, but I have used the tools and skills in these resources to style wigs that I have used for filming days, photo shoots, or other events.

To be perfectly transparent, I prefer to buy styled wigs from reputable sellers. I'll share some of my faves at the bottom of this post. But I also like to play with hair and style wigs, and I have used some of my creations for photo shoots or other events.

One of my favorite YouTube creators for wig content is Kyne.

Kyne has a whole playlist on wig styling and creation topics! They are super easy to follow, and they give you all the information you need to start styling your own wigs. I definitely recommend checking out this creator and bookmark the playlist - if you want to style your own wigs, this is an essential series!

If you're like me, and you believe that "The higher the hair, the closer to god!" then this video is a fantastic resource - how to create double-stack wigs! This is how you get the really big "Texas" hair!

This oddball video is short and a lot of fun if you want to create a wig using yarn! Who needs another afghan?! Take your yarn stores and create a playful wigs that will set your drag character apart! There are lots of styles of drag, and this is one possibility to really make your persona stand out from the crowd.

Fena Barbital has worked with drag luminaries like Trixie Mattel and Katya, and she has a number of great videos on her YouTube channel that can help you as you are building your drag persona - including this "Big Hair" tutorial!

And no discussion of wig styling would be complete without mentioning Drag Race alum Jaymes Mansfield! They have a huge catalog of videos on their YouTube channel, and they work with a lot of really cheap wigs from sites like Amazon and Temu, and shows you some of the potential that these inexpensive wigs have if you just put in the time and effort! They are another resource that I find absolutely invaluable any time I am going to start styling a wig.

These are some of my favorite creators, but YouTube has tons of creators doing amazing work with wigs! If none of these videos resonate for you, feel free to browse YouTube and search for phrases like "drag wig styling," "teasing a wig," or "drag wig tutorial."

If you're like me, and it's sometimes easier to just pay for someone else to do the work for you, here are a couple of my favorite wig creators!

Forgot's Locks (Acacia Forgot) - NOTE: As of this writing, Acacia Forgot is currently appearing on Season 17 of RuPaul's Drag Race. I'm not sure what this is going to do for her wig styling business. I know, I'm happy for her, but I'm also scared for my big melon head if she decides to stop doing custom stylings! But she is my main wig lady of the last few years, so I had to include her.

Benjamin Paul Hair - One of the main stylists for HowsYourHeadWigs.com, they are located in the UK (which can affect time to receive as well as shipping), but they are worth any hassle you might encounter importing your new wig!

Glam Pig Wigs (@glampigwigs) - Gorgeous wigs styled by a performer who is very active in the Seattle drag scene. In addition to big, fluffy styles they also do some amazing structured styles with rhinestones, ornaments, and sometimes even little dioramas in the finished wig!

These are some of my favorites, but you can search Instagram to find tons of stylists and designers. But, as with anything else, be wary of scammers! I hate to recommend it (there can be moments that are just as toxic as the scammers themselves) but there are Facebook groups like Drag Buyers Beware that you can search to see if people have had problems with a seller you've found, or if people are willing to vouch for them.

Whatever you choose to do, I wish you well in your wig styling (or purchasing - I'm right there with you!) journey!

XOXO-

Miss Jaye
